The New York City Department of Education is the largest system of public schools in the United States, serving about 1.1 million students in over 1,700 Department of Health visited schools. SchoolFood serves around 850,000 meals to these students each school day.

As of September 2017, public school children are now eligible for both free breakfast and free lunch during the school day. Read NYC Department of Education Chancellor Carmen FariƱa's Anouncement Letter.

Students must apply to receive free lunches through the online application form.
